Long before a mad scientist brought Boris to life on a stormy night, I was creating a variety of digital content out in the field. From photo shoots in remote locations to travel videos. My main worry when traveling and shooting is all about battery life. It’s hard to focus on creating the perfect shot when you keep staring at the red battery icon on your device. My mind is usually racing with these questions: Am I going to have enough battery to record my video, shoot my photos, do some geocaching, and still be able to get directions to the next location? God forbid I need to call for help or use my flashlight at night. I’ve been on 5% phone power and praying it lasts me until an Uber shows up or my kiddo FaceTimes me – which is specifically why I am sharing my opinion of this item.
In complete transparency, I was reimbursed for my purchase of the Amcrest 26800mAh Power Bank in exchange for providing feedback. My original feedback was posted in an Amazon review. I think Am crest reached out to me because I previously reviewed one of their webcams in exchange for having my purchase reimbursed – and it turned out to be a great little camera that I still use for live streaming.
One of my goals is to not only provide you with a TON of Boris media, but to also provide a glimpse behind the scenes. I’ve always liked watching behind the scenes extras on DVDs because I was interested in how movies were made – and I learned a lot from those. Consider this my way of paying it forward with a lengthier review here on Boris’s site. If you are even a little bit like me, then you are probably here because you like pets or have pets, and you are probably making a lot of content with your pets. You may even be traveling with your adventure pet, so you may need a some backup battery options for you are venturing far away from the comfort of a wall outlet.
This is a beast of a power bank, which I like, but I also realize may not be for everybody. If you want something small to keep in a purse, this is not the pack for you. The pack weighs just over a pound, so it’s weight is noticeable. It’s about the same dimensions as an iPhone X, but about 3 times as thick. Hopefully this give you an idea of the size and weight of the pack. Those are the only real negatives I can find.
The benefits of the pack are that if has multiple power outputs and inputs. There are 2 USB-A outputs, 1 USB-C input/output, 1 MicroUSB input, and a Lightning Port input. For those of you with iPhones, this is a big deal because you can charge your phone and charge your pack with the same cable – which can be handy when traveling so you have one less thing to carry. I also like that it has a digital display that tells you your remaining percentage of power and the current output voltage. You can charge up to 3 devices at one if you use all 3 outputs.
Previous chargers that I owned either had a status light, or a few LED indicating the charge – so I really appreciate a percentage indicator that I can relate to. Obviously the more power you use, the quicker you will deplete the power pack. I tested this pack with my GoPro, a Sony A6000, an iPad Pro, and an iPhone X. The power pack performed great, although it does get a little warm. I would caution you about using this inside a backpack or other type of personal carry-along as the device could overheat if there is not enough air circulating around it.
How well does it work? I was able to charge my iPhone X from 10% to 100% in about 90 minutes and I only used 15% of the power pack. I had similar results with my other devices. While I have not had a chance to use it as an external battery for Night Lapse shots with my GoPro, I have high expectations for the length of a shoot I will be able to get with this power pack.
In summary: I got this pack for free in exchange for providing feedback. I think it’s a bit heavy and large for some – but it packs a lot of power. It’s versatile as it has multiple input and output options, and the digital display helps gauge how much power you really have left. If you need a beast of a battery, then this one may be for you.
